Face mask or shield

Questions and answers regarding the requirement to wear a face mask or shield.

Status 7 October 2020

The current corona restrictions, which were to apply through 18 October, have been extended until the end of 31 October 2020.

 

However, the requirement to wear a face mask etc. on public transport applies until the end of 30 October 2020. 

 

Bars, cafés and restaurants will thus continue to close at 22.00, standing customers must wear face masks, and the ban on gatherings is still max 50 people, for the rest of October.

The requirement to wear a facemask or shield

Yes. Persons aged 12 or more must wear a face mask on public transport, including trains, busses, taxies and ferries, and at train stations, bus stops etc. Persons with a reduced level of consciousness or a physical or mental weakness or the like that make them unable to wear a face mask or shield are exempt from the requirement. The requirement does not apply at shops, cafes etc. located at train stations etc. 

In exceptional cases, it is allowed to remove the face mask or shield entirely or in part if there is a worthy purpose, such as: 

 

  • For a short time while consuming food and drinks if such consumption is allowed on the relevant means of transport etc.
  • To take medication
  • In one's own vehicle during a ferry crossing if passengers are allowed to stay in vehicles by the ferry operator.
  • During a conversation with a person who lip-reads.
  • If the face mask or shield causes respiratory problems or a sense of suffocation.
  • If the police want to verify someone's identity. 

 

Persons who do not wear a face mask etc. as required can be asked to leave The police can fine persons who fail to leave a vehicle or location

Yes. The requirement to wear a face mask or shield also applies in train station areas etc. – also if you just pass through the train station area to reach a shop, a restaurant or a location outside the train station area and even though you have not used public transport to get there. 

However, you can remove the face mask or shield when inside a shop, restaurant etc. located at a train station area.

Yes, persons aged 12 or more must wear a face mask at the premises of establishments selling food, drinks or tobacco for consumption on-site. 

The requirement to wear a face mask or shield does not apply when the guest or customer is seated.

Yes, employees of establishments selling food or drinks and other persons attached to the establishments and having close physical contact with guests must wear a face mask or shield. 

The requirement that staff members must wear a face mask or shield does not apply if they stay in a closed room or in an area behind a barrier screen for staff only.
No, customers at establishments selling takeaway food or drinks only need not wear a face mask or shield when collecting food. 

If food, drinks or tobacco is also sold for consumption on-site between 5.00 am and 10.00 pm, guests have to wear a face mask at the establishment irrespective of whether they are there to eat on-site or just to collect takeaway food.
No, the requirement to wear a face mask or shield does not apply to staff members at establishments selling takeaway food or drinks only.
